Sex Appeal in Advertising

Sex appeal is all the rage in advertising these days.  It was in the past but even more

so now.  And now a days you will see sex appeal in advertisements anywhere from

alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, toothpaste, clothing, activist groups, and so many

more.  Anything involving the American Icon, Pamela Anderson will catch the eye of

the opposite sex and same sex as well because she helps show the ideal American girl.

Sex appeal with American Icons have always played a huge role in advertising in the

past and present and will in the future as well, because it works.

Alcoholic beverages have always shown attractive females and males in their

advertising to sell their products and make it appealing.  And Labatt Blue is no

exception to this.  Pamela Anderson got her start as the "Blue Zone Girl".  In the

advertisement pictured above, it's easy to see the sex appeal incorporated into the

advertisement for Labatt Blue beer.

The sex appeal is shown in this image by the positioning of an attractive young

female (Pamela Anderson) crouched down by the Labatts Blue beer.  The image as a

whole is a tinted blue to keep it stuck in the audience's mind what the name of the beer

is (Labatt Blue) and that the model pictured is the "Blue Zone girl".  It also says to the

audience, "you're in the blue zone".  Sex appeal is also shown in the hairstyle of Pamela

in this picture, her hair looks disheveled and gives the though of "sex hair".  Therefore

showing the male audience, "drink this beer and you'll have sex with an attractive

women."  For the female audience, this shows that if you drink this beer, you'll look like

that and the guys will want you.

And if one does his research well enough they will find out that Pamela Anderson

was a native of the Vancouver Islands in Canada, so this is/was a very strong selling

point for the Canadian beer company, Labatt Blue.

The second advertisement showing sex appeal with Pamela Anderson is PETA.

(People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is an activist group that Pamela shows sex

appeal to an issue that would be rather bland if given just a list of facts about the

organization and what it was created for, which is to raise awareness of the issue.  This

image is shown in vividly bright colors to stand out.  When flipping through a magazine

this image would definitely catch your eye because Pamela Anderson is in a bright

green bikini staring right back at you.  No matter what the advertisement is saying if it

has an American Icon on it, it will be looked at.

The background eluminates the central image of Pamela in a very sex appealed way.

The way she is positioned has a sexy, "come to me" vibe and the hand in the hair is

always portrayed as a seductive gesture.  Now since PETA has caught the audiences

attention they then will read on to see the slogan "Turn over a new leaf" which is

reinforced by the color of the bikini (faded green-color of vegetable greens).  And if one

is intrigued by that slogan they will read on further to see the web link "goveg.com" and

a logo that says PETA.  Since PETA isn't well-known this is a great advertising tool

because people well go to the web page to learn more about it since Pamela enticed them

into the advertisement with sex appeal.

Pamela has the same affect on an audience as she did 15 years ago.  Even though

she's not young and innocent as she was in the Labatts Blue advertisement she still

has the sex appeal and knows how to flaunt it and make it work for her and the

companies she works for or is in support of.  American Icons are always asked to do

advertisements because companies know how big of an influence they have had on

American society and know they'll be good for the selling of their products, thoughts,

and/or opinions.
